"Allow yourself to think only those thoughts that match your principles and can bear the bright light of day. Day by day, your choices, your thoughts, your actions fashion the person you become. Your integrity determines your destiny.” - Heraclitus
Our work is really all about the wonderful and engaging relationships of life. I so enjoy meeting and helping families achieve their highest aspirations for themselves and the communities they live in. What could be better!
Joseph Cohen is the founding partner of HoyleCohen and has served private clients as a fiduciary advisor for over thirty years. Through his creation of The Lifetime Perspective™, he helps clients see their financial situation more clearly and pursue their lifetime goals with confidence.
Joe is a graduate of the US Naval Academy (1970) and later earned his MBA from MIT Sloan (1974). He has held the Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) designation since 1987 and enjoys mentoring several next generation CFP® advisors within HoyleCohen. Joe also holds the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP) designation, which is a graduate-level designation that is designed and aimed toward bringing advisors and fundraisers together in common purpose for the good of their mutual clients and their communities.
Joe’s passion in planning for clients is evident in all dimensions. Families must first be secure and confident in their own financial situation. Next, the provision for family members must be in place. When these two priorities are squarely addressed, Joe then seeks to help families understand and gain confidence in their ability to contribute financially to the people, causes, and institutions they care about. He calls this coming to appreciate one’s Charitable Capacity.
Joe has been actively involved with non profit organizations for over twenty years. Most recently, he has completed service as a trustee for The Jewish Community Foundation (San Diego), The Orcas Island Community Foundation, and The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Currently, he serves as a trustee for the Old Globe Theatre (San Diego) and works on special projects in the Orcas Island non profit community.
Joe loves physically challenging opportunities. He has twice summited both Mt. Rainier and Mt. Whitney in winter climbs. He now confines his hiking to beautiful trails without a lot of snow! He is married to Martha Farish and together they share three wonderful children and three charming granddaughters.
